Vintage Coral Spheres - Half Drilled
Vintage Coral spheres. Ox Blood shade. More red than bright orange, as my camera shows.
These were cut in the 1970's at a legal harvest during a harbour enlargement programme in Thai Wan.
Some are half drilled, some drilled with two holes but very near the tops, so they could still be peg set with the use of a cap to hide any extra holes. Some are a little more gnarly at the drill site.
I purchased these some time ago from a retired jeweller friend, who purchased these himself in the 1970's in the Far East. He believes these could well be colour enhanced, as to find natural colour Ox Blood Coral of this depth/thickness is very rare.
The drilled areas also show a much paler coral shade. The Ox Blood colouration normally only occurs at the tips of the coral branches, so natural Ox Blood coral cabs tend to be small or quite thin. All this being said - these are very attractive and would look beautiful in any design.
4.7 - 5.1 mm in diameter.
