Kingsclere Gems - How It All Began!

Jacqueline Austen

Hi everyone!

I have been asked how Kingsclere Gems came about and I thought some of you may be interested in knowing why this little business was set up.

Maybe best to start off with a little bit about me.... I am a happily married mum with four wonderful children. I always had an avid interest in rocks, minerals and fossils and was lucky enough to grow up on the Jurassic coast in the South of England. I studied geology at school and worked in the Geology Department at a local University

I started off making and designing my own jewellery from an early age and sold it at fairs, on line and at private events. Through these, I made many contacts who are now retired jewellers themselves, and managed to amass a large stash of stones which I used in my own creations.

These were all hand made in 18ct White gold with Welo Opal drops and 0.50 ct Diamonds

As the children grew we had to move to a larger home and the only option to finance the renovations of the doer-upper we were lucky enough to buy, was to start selling my beloved personal stone collection - many vintage stones and one of a kind pieces. Needs must. We planned to sell enough to try and finish the house....

These became popular and I started to use my contacts to source more gems and opened my Facebook Group. Due to popular demand, the website was born, with the invaluable input of Emma and Graham, close friends and neighbours, without whom I could not have got this website up and running.

Selling online works perfectly round my family commitments. Two of my children have additional needs, so working the hours I can around their needs, has been a godsend to our family.

It has been a month since Kingsclere Gems - the website - was opened and I am really looking forward to seeing where this venture will take us. Still not finished the house, but working on it!
